Long Term Commitment to Animals is More Important Than Short Term Commitment
Life is often busy, and things frequently get in the way of us helping animals. We have to move apartments, find a new job, take care of a sick loved one, take care of ourselves, etc. etc. This is all totally normal, and no matter how much we care about helping animals, we are going to find that life has its own plans.
That's why I think one of the most important things is long-term commitment to the cause—the personal commitment that no matter what, you're going to find a way to help out at some point, even if that has to be next week, next month, or next year.
This is also a commitment to push through crappy situations and find a way around less-than-perfect people in the movement for farmed animals. Sometimes, there simply isn't the right organization for us. Sometimes, pro-animal people treat us badly or engage in various kinds of unethical behavior, and that can really suck and be demoralizing.
But if you have a long-term commitment to the cause of helping animals, then you'll take a step back, reassess the situation, and find a way forward. That way forward may be slow, and it may be hard, and it may take years, but you'll find a way. Because you'll remember how important it is.
It's important enough to keep trying, year after year, for all the years to come.
